March Madness. For sports fans, the phrase is synonymous with the excitement and legendary performances of college basketball’s biggest annual tournament. Before we continue, we send our cheers and acknowledgement to the UCLA Bruins, for their great season! We look forward to seeing you back next year.
During this month’s madness – athletes, coaches, faculty, media and sports fans alike share in their passion for the game they love. There are winners, there are losers, there are falling stars and rising heroes – most importantly there are lessons.
What can parents take away from March Madness that can be shared with their children? How about resiliency, effort, determination and teamwork? All of these are important core values that we consistently highlight in our programs at The UCLA Family Commons.
Even an underdog can prosper…it takes commitment and hard work.
As you filled out your NCAA bracket and turned on the television for the games, you had a great opportunity to talk to your kids and let them share in the experience. They can learn that even an underdog can prosper despite the odds being against them. They can learn that it takes commitment and hard work to achieve greatness. They can learn the value of working together and communicating with their peers.
The best part about sharing in the madness is that you are the one introducing them to it. Maybe it grows into a family ritual, or maybe it’s just one-and-done. Regardless, it’s a memory that they will have of bonding, enjoying one of America’s greatest traditions and learning lessons on what it takes to march towards greatness!
